Three Marines Who Survived the Abbey Gate Bombing Receive Upgraded Valor Awards

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth upgraded the valor awards of three Marines who were guarding Abbey Gate at the Kabul airport when a suicide bomber struck during the 2021 evacuation. Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Eby and two fellow Marines survived the blast that killed 13 American service members. The upgrades come five years after the attack.
