A Jury Awards a Louisiana Justice Damages in a Rare Defamation Win

An Iberville Parish jury found that a local newspaper and two former editors defamed Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Jefferson Hughes in a 2019 editorial. Public officials rarely prevail in defamation suits because of the actual-malice standard. The verdict is expected to be appealed.
