Antarctic microbes offer a possible explanation for ancient iron deposits

via Phys.org·5h ago

Researchers identified iron-oxidizing microbes in dark Antarctic sediment and showed that a microbial protein can oxidize iron, Phys.org reports in a Yonsei University account. Comparable organisms may help explain iron deposits formed during Snowball Earth. The experiments demonstrate the protein’s activity; applying the mechanism to ancient deposits remains an inference.
