CenterPoint Confirms Customer Data Theft; Hacker’s Record Count Remains Unverified

CenterPoint Energy confirmed that an unauthorized party obtained some customers’ personal information through an external-facing system. An attacker claims to have stolen 7.49 million records, but the utility has not confirmed that figure or the claimed data fields. The company says electric and gas service continued normally as it investigates the breach.
