The First Automobile Clubs Volunteered for World War I and Helped Mechanize War
Some of the earliest automobile enthusiasts volunteered their cars and driving skills to the Allied war effort in World War I. Their service helped move soldiers, supplies and the wounded at a scale armies had not managed before. Historians credit the episode with accelerating the mechanization of modern warfare.
