Rural data centers could qualify for expanded federal tax benefits

WIRED reports that expanded opportunity-zone rules taking effect January 1 could make rural data-center projects eligible for federal tax benefits. Research reviewed by the outlet identified more than 100 potentially eligible projects. Eligibility does not show that firms will claim the benefits; Microsoft, Meta and Amazon told WIRED they do not use or have not claimed the program.
