Soil evidence traces early Maya farming near wetlands

A study of southern Belize found soil and ecological evidence of farming, probably maize, near wetlands about 6,000 years ago, Phys.org and the University of New Mexico report. Later cultivation shifted into uplands as climate and populations changed. The findings reconstruct local farming history; crop identification and explanations for the shift involve interpretation.
