A University of Maryland 'Teacher of the Year' Is Detained by ICE in Texas

Pharmacy instructor Berhanu Kibret, who had just received a teacher of the year award at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, was arrested by immigration agents at Dallas-Fort Worth airport. DHS says he overstayed his visa and describes him as an illegal alien from Ethiopia. The university said it was "greatly troubled" by the arrest, while supporters of the enforcement action argue the award does not change the underlying status question.
